    From 1972 to 2020, the progressive wing of the Democratic party has evolved and adapted to follow a changing American society that looks drastically different today than the one that overwhelmingly rejected George McGovern in 1972 in favor of President Nixon. From being blamed for dragging down Democratic candidates through the 1970s and \u2780s to being sidelined by the New Democrat movement headlined by President\u27s Clinton and Obama to resurging back into popularity in 2016 led by Bernard Bernie Sander\u27s run for the Democratic nomination, the movement is now as strong as ever. This research looks at how progressives within the Democratic party attempted to influence the party\u27s national platform from 1972 to 2020, how progressives managed to rise to prominence within the party in 2016, and what their sudden rise in political power and influence says about American society today

    Liquid side flow characteristics in a packed absorption column

    This thesis is primarily concerned with the study of techniques which enable flow conditions in complex geometrical arrangements to be measured and analysed. The liquid side in a packed absorption tower is chosen to illustrate the principles involved. The analysis of disturbance testing involves the evaluation of the moments of the resulting residence time distribution curves. It has in the past been found that this method often produces misleading results due to the magnification of experimental errors. An improved method of moment analysis is introduced in this work in an attempt to lessen this effect. It is also shown that much more useful information can be obtained by measuring the response to a disturbance at a number of selected positions in the bed rather than a single determination at the outlet from the column. Two mathematical models are chosen to describe the observed flow situation. The values of their characteristic parameters, as determined from the disturbance testing, are shown to exhibit a number of interesting features which enhance our knowledge of liquid side flow conditions. Finally, a technique is introduced to study flow behaviour from chemical reaction data. The experimental results obtained are shown to agree very closely with theoretically derived values

    Quark-gluon vertex dressing and meson masses beyond ladder-rainbow truncation

    We include a generalized infinite class of quark-gluon vertex dressing diagrams in a study of how dynamics beyond the ladder-rainbow truncation influences the Bethe-Salpeter description of light quark pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The diagrammatic specification of the vertex is mapped into a corresponding specification of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel, which preserves chiral symmetry. This study adopts the algebraic format afforded by the simple interaction kernel used in previous work on this topic. The new feature of the present work is that in every diagram summed for the vertex and the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter kernel, each quark-gluon vertex is required to be the self-consistent vertex solution. We also adopt from previous work the effective accounting for the role of the explicitly non-Abelian three gluon coupling in a global manner through one parameter determined from recent lattice-QCD data for the vertex. With the more consistent vertex used here, the error in ladder-rainbow truncation for vector mesons is never more than 10% as the current quark mass is varied from the u/d region to the b region.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure

    A study of the effects of exercise on the urinary metabolome using normalisation to individual metabolic output

    Aerobic exercise, in spite of its multi-organ benefit and potent effect on the metabolome, has yet to be investigated comprehensively via an untargeted metabolomics technology. We conducted an exploratory untargeted liquid chromatography mass spectrometry study to investigate the effects of a one-h aerobic exercise session in the urine of three physically active males. Individual urine samples were collected over a 37-h protocol (two pre-exercise and eight post-exercise). Raw data were subjected to a variety of normalization techniques, with the most effective measure dividing each metabolite by the sum response of that metabolite for each individual across the 37-h protocol expressed as a percentage. This allowed the metabolite responses to be plotted on a normalised scale. Our results highlight significant metabolites located in the following systems: purine pathway, tryptophan metabolism, carnitine metabolism, cortisol metabolism, androgen metabolism, amino acid oxidation, as well as metabolites from the gastrointestinal microbiome. Many of the significant changes observed in our pilot investigation mirror previous research studies, of various methodological designs, published within the last 15 years, although they have never been reported at the same time in a single study
